Lyophilization is a process in which water is removed from a frozen product and placed in vacuum which allows the ice to directly convert into vapor. In this process ice is directly converted in vapor phase without undergoing liquid phase.  This process includes three phases namely freezing, sublimation and desorption. Many products such as biotechnologically derived, anti-infective and in vitro diagnostics are manufactured through lyophilization process. Anti infective products include semi synthetic penicillin, cephalosporin, erythromycin, doxycycline and chloramphenicol which are produced through lyophilization. Biotechnologically derived lyophilized products include methylprednisolone sodium and hydrocortisone sodium succinate. Lyophilization is a crucial process in detecting the presence of gram negative organism like Pseudomonas sp in a bulk solution. 


The products which are to be lyophilized are frozen at a temperature below than eutectic point. After freezing, products are exposed to primary drying where it is converted in vapor phase. It is important to hold drying temperature at least 4 to 5 degree below than the eutectic point. Post sublimation phase desorption is performed where products are exposed to secondary drying. In desorption stage the product is released from the surface to set equilibrium between bulk phase and adsorbing surface. The equipments required to perform this process includes drying chamber, condenser vacuum system and process controller.  The process control instruments include, shelf, condenser temperature controller chamber and condenser pressure controller.

Lyophilization is helpful in manufacturing of those products which are unstable in solutions. In addition these equipments are gaining importance in diagnostic segment since they are able to detect the presence of microorganism in a bulk sample. Despite various advantages, the market growth may anticipate a slow down due to various factors such as vial contamination, increased handling and processing time, cost and complexity of these equipments. Moreover moisture retention can also create inappropriate biological products.
