Hemostasis is the phenomenon of
interaction between platelets, blood vessels and coagulation protein which
helps to stop the bleeding. In addition, this process also maintains the blood
flow in the blood vessels. Bleeding disorders could be a result of vascular and
coagulation abnormalities. Hemostasis diagnostics helps in detection of these
abnormalities and assists in proper treatment. Hemostasis diagnostic tests
include Activated Partial Prothrombin Time (APPT), Prothrombin time (PT), and
Fibrinogen assay.

PT test is performed by extraction
of the blood sample and then blood cells are separated from the blood through
centrifugation process. The patient’s plasma is then added to these cells to
convert prothrombin to thrombin through tissue factors (V, VII and X) present
in the plasma. This helps in detection of factors V, VII and X, Fibrinogen and
Prothrombin in the blood sample. This test thus assists in the detection of
hemostasis disorders. However in APPT, kininogen, prekallikrein are added to
the blood cells which converts factor XI to XIa and helps in detection of any
the abnormality related to the absence of XIa. In fibrinogen assay, plasma,
bovine and imidazole buffered saline solutions are used to quantify fibrinogen
content in blood sample.
Hemostasis disorder results in
venous thromboembolism, acute coronary syndrome, dessiminated intravascular
coagulation and postsurgical bleeding. Various cancers such as breast, kidney,
liver, blood and lungs cancer are the major cause of hemostasis disorders.
Amongst all these, liver cancer increases the risk of hemostasis disorders
since it produces most clotting factors and inhibitors. In addition, it also
produces numerous proteins which are involved in the process of fibrinoysis. In
2012, it has been estimated that around 120,000 people were suffering from
liver cancer and is expected to grow exponentially.
This exponential growth of liver
cancer would augment the growth of hemostasis diagnostics market. Moreover,
rise in aging population worldwide is increasing the accidental rate such as
falling and injuries would also support the growth of this market. Hemostasis
diagnostic tests are also performed prior to operation to test for quick
healing process. This would also boost the growth of hemostasis diagnostic
market worldwide.
Some of the market players in
homeostasis diagnostic market globally include Abbott Laboratories, Siemens
Inc., Beckman Coulter and Danaher Corporation, Instrumentation Laboratory and
others.
